"The best team to never play in the NFL"; a phrase often used to describe the Ironton Tanks semipro football team. From 1919 to 1930 the Ironton (Ohio) Tanks compiled a 85 - 19 - 14 record playing other semipro teams as well as teams from the NFL. The tanks recruited local talent as well as national stars like Greasy Neale and Glenn Presnell and competed with other teams from Ohio including the Portsmouth Spartans, Canton Bulldogs, and Akron Awnings. The Tanks disbanded following the 1930 season; but not before knocking off both the Chicago Bears and New York Giants in that final campaign. Offered here is a piece of pro football history, a 14" x 22" cardboard art deco broadside advertising the 1929 Ironton Tanks home schedule; sponsored by Sanda's Drug Store. The broadside has been affixed to black paper has two heavy horizontal folds, creasing, small areas of paper loss, tack holes and border wear. The schedule shows the Spartans playing the Chicago Cardinals to conclude the season, but according to researchers that game was never played...possibly due to a poor showing by the Tanks in the second half of the season that saw them finish with 5 wins and 6 losses. A spectacular vintage football piece!
