Ellsworth McGillivray began apprenticing as a photographer in the early 1880's. After about ten years of working in other studios he moved back to his hometown of Ithica, New York, purchased The Forrest City Art Gallery, and began selling photographs and artwork. At approximately the same time the popularity of American "Foot Ball" was increasing rapidly. Cornell University in Ithica was considered one of the better teams in the country; not quite at the level of Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Penn...but definitely a strong program. At some point in the 1890's Cornell contacted Ellsworth to produce individual player cabinets. The result was some of the most stunning photographs from that era known to the hobby. The depth and clarity of each of the five portraits is unmatched by other contemporary portraits that we have handled. Unfortunately very few of the examples known have any specific information written on them about the player depicted. The five examples from this lot measure approximately 5" x 7" (mount measurement) and have "McGillivary, Forrest City Gallery, Ithica, NY" printed on the mount.
