William Mackie was described in contemporary accounts as the largest man on the Harvard team. During his sophomore season of 1891 he played right tackle but would later to move to right guard during his senior year (1893) and remain there during his first year of medical school (1894). Mackie's offensive responsibilities included a "jump back" from his guard position into the backfield before the ball was snapped to serve as an escort for the ball carrier. He completed medical school in 1898 and afterwards practiced medicine in Brookline, Massachusetts. This particular example of the N302 Mackie is the highest graded at PSA 7 and the only example at that level.
