The best, greatest, all time finest...words and phrases often associated with hyperbole, triteness, and exaggeration. In the card collecting arena defining one's collection with such terminology can illicit debate and competition. To describe this set it would be impossible and incorrect not to utilize such terminology...simply stated this is the most incredible assemblage of N302 Mayo's ever. There is no competition and no need for debate. Within this group, 23 of the 34 offered cards are the highest graded examples ever; all 1 of 1's. To date there are seven N302's that received an 8 NM-MT designation; all seven are in this group. Thirteen cards have received 7's; eleven of those cards are included in this near set. The 34 cards are all part of the #1 All Time 1894 N302 Mayo Cut Plug set (the anonymous/Dunlop card is not included as part of this group) which can be viewed as a list here:

Why 1894? What prompted the P. H. Mayo Company in Virginia to produce the first card set of football players about halfway through the last decade of the of the 19th Century? The answer is likely simple and complex at the same time. Competition between the tobacco companies in the late 19th century prompted various advertising and marketing campaigns to gain an edge in sales. Inserts such as cards were an added cost to produce; so the selection of 35 football players to boost sales probably involved a decent amount of discussion and debate. In the mid 1890's football was becoming a national craze; and the epicenter was located on the east coast between Massachusetts and New Jersey. Harvard, Yale and Princeton were considered the elite football programs of the era. The 1893 Thanksgiving Day game between Yale and Princeton drew over 40,000 fans to Coogan's Bluff in New York City as well as national media attention. The aura and excitement surrounding this game of "Foot Ball" probably did not escape the attention of the executives at P.H. Mayo. In fact, it was likely the inspiration for the set's production. Many of the images used for the cards were taken directly from 1893 team photos including the picture taken of Princeton following their upset victory over Yale in that Thanksgiving Day game. Was the promotion a success? It is difficult to say. A follow up set in 1895 would have been a positive indicator.

Some collectors dismiss the set as an anomaly...simply a group of no-name college players. Nothing can be further from the truth. A majority from the set were All-American selections at least once. Six of the players are enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame; and three of those six are arguably among the best who ever played. The following biographies; which discuss the players feats on the gridiron and contribution to society afterwards, will hopefully "bring to life" the players from the N302 set.

The near set is being auctioned as a complete group and as individual cards. At the conclusion of the auction if the final bid for the complete set exceeds the cumulative bids for the individual cards the entire near set will go to one winning bidder. If the cumulative bids for the individual cards exceed the final bid for the near set then cards will go to the winners of each of those lots.
