Franklin B. Morse was a three-year starter for the Tigers. Contemporary newspaper accounts describe him as "daring and reckless"; often catapulting himself into the air to gain extra yardage. His efforts were rewarded with an All-American selection following the 1893 season. Morse caught a long lateral pass from Ward in the 1893 game versus Yale. It was the first noted play of its kind; and has been credited by some as the beginning of the trend which eventually evolved into the forward pass (legalized a decade later). Morse had somewhat of a disappointing senior campaign likely due to injuries and a move from halfback to the quarterback position. Morse was the model for a popular painting by Charles Dana Gibbons called "The Halfback". He served in the Army during the Spanish-American War. In civilian life Morse worked as a sportswriter on the West Coast. This is a very eye-appealing example; graded as a PSA 5 (MC) due to top to bottom centering.
