Frank Butterworth's role in the Yale offense would not be familiar to modern followers of football. Prior to the snap, Butterworth would leave his position on the line (usually tackle) and replace one of the halfbacks in the backfield. Butterworth started for three seasons for the Bulldogs and was selected as a first team All American following his junior (1893) and senior (1894) seasons. Butterworth coached briefly at Cal and at Yale prior to 1900. He served as a Connecticut state senator and was a member of a number of other State committees. The offered example of the N302 Butterworth is pleasing to eye with excellent registration and clarity. It has been assigned a grade of PSA 6 MC.
